Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16610LV “Kermit” – The Anniversary Sub That Started It All

Celebrating 50 years of the world’s most iconic dive watch, the Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16610LV—lovingly known as the “Kermit”—was unveiled in 2003 to mark a major milestone in Rolex history. Instantly recognized by its vibrant green aluminum bezel insert, the 16610LV was the first Submariner to break from the traditional black bezel design, making it both a collector's darling and a turning point in the Sub’s design language.

This reference retains the classic 40mm Oyster case crafted from 904L stainless steel, known for its resistance to corrosion and its brilliant polish. The green bezel, exclusive to the 16610LV, adds bold contrast and character to the otherwise stealthy black dial—earning it the Kermit nickname from enthusiasts. Unlike its successor, the 116610LV “Hulk,” the Kermit maintains the slimmer case and aluminum bezel insert, offering a more vintage-inspired presence with modern durability.

The glossy black Maxi dial features enlarged hour markers and broader hands filled with Super-LumiNova, significantly improving legibility and marking another first for the Submariner line. The dial is paired with Rolex’s signature Cyclops lens over the date at 3 o’clock, sitting beneath a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

Powered by the Rolex Caliber 3135, the 16610LV offers time-tested reliability, quickset date functionality, and COSC-certified chronometer accuracy. It boasts a 48-hour power reserve and continues to be celebrated for its robust construction and minimal service requirements.

Completing the watch is the solid-link Oyster bracelet with flip-lock clasp and diver’s extension—offering both a secure fit and quick adjustability on the wrist. With 300 meters of water resistance, this Submariner remains every bit the tool watch it was born to be, despite its collector status.

The Ref. 16610LV was discontinued in 2010, making its 7-year production run relatively short by Rolex standards. Its combination of historic significance, distinctive colorway, and transitional design elements have elevated it to grail status among enthusiasts. For those seeking the first modern Submariner to boldly go green, the “Kermit” is where the legend began.
